What Is A Complex Child?
Complex Children Keep Everyone Stumped Trying to Figure Them Out.  Then They Change
Parenting Your Complex Child (AMACOM Books Spring 2006) defines a complex child in greater detail.  For here and now, I define a complex child as a developmentally disabled child who doesn't respond to care and treatment the way others do.  He may have multiple diagnoses or not manifest symptoms similarly to other children with his diagnosis.  Please check back on this page for updates soon and watch for the release of my book.  In the meantime enjoy some pictures of Billy Ray doing tasks or having fun.
Sometimes Billy Ray is listening to sounds we don't hear and voices in his head.  It is as if we are not even there.
When normal school activities don't work you have to get creative to find activities that are meaningful.  Billy Ray enjoys putting shopping carts away at a local market.  Here he is  being taught to do that by consultant Dan Hobbs
Everything has to be adapted to what works for your child.  First you have to learn to read him. Chances are your child gives you clues.  I will have information on how to pick up on those signs in the book.
The hardest part is getting professionals to see your child as he is and provide services appropriate for him.  My advocating and documentation methods coming in the book and tips on this site.  Check back often for additions.
He loves giving his horse hay and grain.  For years I kept telling the doctor if we could only motivate the rest of his life the way feeding his horse motivated him to self control his behavior we could change his life.  Finally we understood how to do that and are anxious to share it with you in my book, speaking tour and on this site.
